The News Starts Now

Several months ago, I began talking to the journalism department at San Diego State University about starting an independent, student-produced news podcast at SDSU. After some discussion, they suggested that I pursue a collaboration with KCR, SDSU's student-run radio station, and that is how The Aztec Update came to be.

A Tale of Two Cities

This year has been so many things--the end of an era, the beginning of something new, and an epic journey in and of itself. So much has happened, so much has been accomplished, and so much lies ahead yet to be discovered. The calendar year is coming to an end, and the new year is just around the corner, so let us reminisce about what was the year 2007.

This Semester, Next Semester, and Beyond

There's just a few weeks of classes left this semester, and less than a month until the end of finals, so things are definitely moving along. This has been a particularly difficult semester--challenging on a personal, collegiate, and professional level--but the good news is that at this point it is very unlikely that I could do anything to fail any of my classes, and right now, passing is all that I'm worrying about.

The Week in Review, the Month Ahead

This week, I visited my parents back home in Grover Beach. They hosted a five-day family reunion that brought together both my family and my dad's family. I rarely get the chance to spend time with my parents anymore--much less see my sister, brother-in-law, or aunts and uncles that live hundreds of miles away--so I'm really glad I made the trip.

Cough, Cough

Last month, I fell ill with a nasty virus. For two weeks, my body temperature remained high as I suffered from generally unpleasant flu-like symptoms. My doctor back home prescribed an antibiotic because he thought a bacterial infection may have resulted from a viral infection, and that medicine took care of just about everything--everything except for my cough.

The End of an Era, the Beginning of Something New

Today marks the end of an era. Friday was my last day at KSBY. Nearly half-a-decade ago, I began a high-school internship at the station. Less than a year later, I officially joined the KSBY team as a news production assistant, and a year after that, I was promoted to newscast director. Ever since then, I've been directing the station's weekday and weekend newscasts, making many good friends along the way.

Seven Days of Sickness, Six Degrees from Death

For the past week, a nasty, yet-to-be identified virus has been making me sick. It began last week on Monday night as I suddenly fell ill at work. The next day, things had worsened. Just overnight, I had developed a fever with headaches, lightheadedness, coughing, a sore throat, and the chills. From June 11-17, my body temperature fluctuated between 100-103 F, and peaked at a high of 103.7 F on Wednesday night.
